THE GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE:

The Great Kindness Challenge is one week dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion on school campuses worldwide. Our school is proudly participating in this proactive and positive kindness initiative from January 28 – February 1.  All students will receive The Great Kindness Challenge checklist. Please encourage your child to complete as many acts of kindness as possible. We are also happy to invite YOU to participate using the new Family Edition checklist. Your family can complete the checklist anytime and anywhere. Together, let’s show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!

Monday, January 28  (Day 2)

  • Grade 6 Independent Studies Kickoff
  • Kindness Week:
    • “Spread Kindness like Sunshine”
      • Wear yellow or another sunny colour to school to earn points for your house team!
      • Kindness Station: Grades K-3 can join Ms. Mackinnon for a kindness story!
      • Kindness Checklists will be distributed to all students to complete at home and school throughout the week!

Tuesday, January 29 (Day 3)

    • Round 2 of the Grade 1 and Grade 2 chess tournament during lunch recess. Students will be notified at school.
    • Kindness Week Activity: “Kindness is Snow Much Fun”
      • Kindness Station: Students are invited to join in for a fun snow building activity in the field! (Weather Permitting)

Wednesday, January 30 (Day 4)

  • Kindness Week Activity: “Reach Out With a Kind-Hearted Hand”
    • Kindness Station: Students are invited to create a “Kind-Hearted Hand” display at lunch recess!
  • Nighthawks Basketball
    • Boys travel to the St. Theresa Hawks.
    • Girls host the St. Theresa Hawks.

Thursday, January 31 (Day 5)

    • No Chess Today
    • No Basketball After School Today.
  • Kindness Week: “Share a kind Word with Others”
    • Kindness Station: Students are invited to create a kindness bookmark for a friend!

Friday, January 25 (Day 1)

  • Kindness Week: “Kindness Rocks!”
    • Kindness Station: Bring a rock to school to decorate with kind messages. Please write your
      name and class on the rock so we can return them to you once we have finished displaying

Next week is a short week as teachers will be attending the North-Central Teachers’ Convention on Thursday, February 7 and Friday, February 8.

 

 

 

The Great Kindness Challenge

The Great Kindness Challenge is coming to NHS from January 28 to February 1!

We will kick off the week with “Spreading Kindness Like Sunshine.” Everyone is invited to wear yellow or other ‘sunny’ colours on Monday, January 28!

Different events and challenges to promote kindness with each other will be occurring throughout the week.

Please note that Friday, January 25, is an in- lieu day. Note also that Elk Island Public Schools will be open and buses will be running, but there is no school for NHS students on that day.

  • County Sponsored Session; Promoting Success – Learning by Building Executive Functioning Skills
    • Take a peek inside the developing brain of a child to learn about the processes that enable kids to engage in problem solving and goal directed behaviors. Learn about these skills and how they impact learning, behavior, emotions, and social interactions. Caregivers will be provided with strategies and resources to assist their children in building their executive functioning skills, including inhibition, working memory and mental flexibility.This session is made possible through Alberta Health Services and New Horizons School.

Friday, January 25 (Day 2) 

  • School is Closed: In Lieu Day
    • In accordance with the collective agreement between the New Horizons Charter School Society and the Alberta Teachers’ Association, teachers are provided with a total of three “in lieu days” during the school year. These days are provided in lieu of parent-teacher conferences related to report cards and Individual Program Plans that are held at various points during the year.

Nighthawks Basketball Season Begins With a Bang

The New Horizons Nighthawks play in the Elk Island Catholic Schools “B” Basketball League, and both the girls and boys teams began the year on Thursday, January 10, with season-opener wins against the Holy Spirit Heat. The girls won their game with a score of 35-10 and the boys won their game with a score of 70-48.

Over the January 11th and 12th weekend, New Horizons hosted an invitational basketball tournament with boys and girls teams from Holy Redeemer, St. Theresa, and Holy Spirit participating.

The girls went through the round-robin with a win against Holy Spirit to take third spot.

The New Horizons Nighthawks take the gold at their Invitational Tournament on January 11/12.

The boys went through the round-robin undefeated and met the St. Theresa Hawks in the gold medal game. In an exciting contest, the boys pulled ahead in the final four minutes to defeat the Hawks 51-33 and capture the gold!

Congratulations to both Nighthawks teams!

    • Tournament begins Friday after school and ends late Saturday afternoon.
