Appointment of New NHS Secretary-Treasurer

The Board of Directors of the New Horizons Charter School Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Tracy Leigh to the position of Secretary-Treasurer, effective January 1, 2019. Ms. Leigh holds a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration degree from NAIT and also holds professional designation as a Chartered Professional Accountant.

Tracy Leigh will assume the position of Secretary Treasurer on January 1, 2019.

With more than 25 years of experience in accounting, she has worked in various roles including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and full cycle accounting, as well as in more senior roles as accountant/controller. In addition to operating her own private accounting firm, she has been employed in various types of organizations, including construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, and as Assistant Secretary Treasurer with an Alberta school division. We are most pleased to extend a warm New Horizons’ welcome to Ms. Leigh and look forward to working with her in the new year.

Board Chair Nicole Pasemko and current Secretary-Treasurer Fred de Kleine welcome Tracy Leigh to her new position.

Sincere thanks are extended to Mr. Fred de Kleine for his excellent, faithful service as our school’s Secretary-Treasurer for the past seventeen years. During his years of service, the school has grown from an enrolment 120 students and a staff of about ten to an enrolment of 353 and a staff of more than thirty. In addition, we have acquired a modern, complex campus which involves agreements with more than twenty contracted service providers. Throughout this period of immense growth, Mr. de Kleine has ensured that the finances of our school have remained healthy and strong. We wish him all the best as he enters a well-deserved retirement.

Over seventy families enjoyed a night of fantastic costumes, great music and light show, spooky decorations, and an evening of visiting with other families during the Family Halloween Dance held on the evening of October 26.

Soles4Souls

Thank you to everyone for gathering up your old shoes and bringing them into the school over the past week. New Horizons School was participating in Strathcona County’s Soles4Souls school drive. The Soles4Souls campagin is a national campaign to collect old shoes and keep them out of the landfill. Soles4Souls distributes donated shoes to those who need them most.

Because of the amazing participation from NHS families, our school gathered over 1,000 shoes – and that was enough to make us the largest donor in the drive. Strathcona County has donated several prizes that include toys and gift cards. We will be drawing names for those prizes on Monday morning’s assembly.

Sparky

Sparky was in our school speaking to kindergarten students about fire prevention.  As part of its annual Fire Prevention activities, Strathcona County Emergency Services offers fire prevention education to all elementary schools within the county.

New Horizons Happenings (October 9-12)

Congratulations Miss Graham!

Congratulations to Miss Kandace Graham for winning Imperial Oil’s Inspiring Teacher Event held in honor of World Teacher Day last week.  Individuals were asked to nominate a teacher who they felt was inspiring, and out of more than 250 teachers  nominated from the Edmonton/Sherwood Park zone, Miss Graham received the most nominations.

As many of you are aware, Miss Graham is our new music teacher and has brought music back into the school. She is able to reach most of the students in the school through her classroom instruction and by offering various music and drama clubs during lunch recesses. Imperial Oil will be giving Miss Graham a gift card, and the school will be receiving $5,000.00!

Thank you to Imperial Oil for their generosity and taking the time to recognize World Teacher Day. As well, thank you to all of you who gave their support to Miss Graham’s nomination.
