Thursday, March 1

  • PINK SHIRT DAY at NHS
    • Because of previously booked events, many students will be out of the school on February 28. Therefore, we are having our Pink Shirt Day on March 1.
    • We will be holding our Pink Shirt Day assembly at 8:45 a.m.
    • On this day, students and staff are encouraged to will wear pink to support bully prevention and awareness. Here is the story behind Pink Shirt Day which began in 2007.
  • Grade 5/6 basketball tournament at Holy Redeemer School (Ardrossan)

Friday, March 2

NHS Girls Nighthawks Win Bronze!

 

Congratulations to the NHS girls Nighthawks basketball team for winning the bronze medal in the EICS B League last week Thursday. The team took an early lead in the game against Holy Spirit and ended up winning 37-17. Thank you to coach Savanna Wygiera for coaching the team.

 

 

 

The boys also played on Thursday, but lost in a nail-biter to Holy Redeemer. The boys took an early lead and maintained it up to the dying seconds of the game, but ended up losing 39-37. Congratulations on a gritty performance!

Winter Fun

On Thursday, the weather cooperated and we were able to have some winter fun with our Mini-Olympics. A combination of outdoor and indoor activities gave students from grades 1-5 an opportunity for some winter fun while the grade 6’s also enjoyed a leadership opportunity as they guided their groups to the various events which were run by our junior high students. Thank you to Mrs. Dinel’s leadership class for organizing the event!

Thursday, February 22

  • Jr. High Boys and Girls Basketball teams play for Bronze! Go Nighthawks!

 

  • Our Mini-Olympics was originally set for Wednesday of this week. However, in anticipation of cold wind chills Wednesday morning, we are postponing this event to Thursday morning.

On the morning of Thursday, February 22, NHS will be holding its own mini-Olympics!

Students from grades 1-5 will participate in a series of events such as “slooshing” and “snowshoeing.” With the anticipated temperatures being on the rather “wintry”  side in the morning, we are having both indoor and outdoor events. Groups will be led by grade 6 students, and the events run by junior high students. Staff will be assigned stations to supervise events.

The games will begin at around 8:45 a.m. and end at lunch time.

Please make sure your child has appropriate outer wear. Our lost and found has many coats, gloves, and hats that may include your child’s items. Please take a moment to come in and see if any item belongs to your child.

Friday, February 22

  • Grade 5 Independent Studies Fair at 2:00 p.m.
    • Students in Grade 5W and 5J will be sharing their passion and topics of interest in the gym.

NHS Mini Olympics

Leadership at NHS

Leadership is one of the options available to junior high students at NHS. As part of their course work, students enrolled in this option choose one leadership activity that positively benefits the school.

Over the last few weeks, one leadership team has been designing a wall mural – you may have seen it in the halls beside the foods lab. Students Brooke, Annie, Savannah and Kyla have been working on a design and have recently been able to get some some graphic design feedback from one of our parents, Laura Rasmussen.

    • Students seeking to apply to New Horizons School for the 2018-2019 school year should have a necessary documents submitted by today.
      • The deadline for application may be extended to specific grades after March 2 should any openings remain.

 

Tuesday, February 13

  • Jr. High Boys Basketball after school (3:30 – 5:00).

 

 

The Book Fair is on! The Book Fair will be running from 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. daily and ends on Thursday, February 15.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentines activities will be occurring throughout the elementary classes.

 

 

 

 

 

Thursday February 15

  • Jr. High Boys and Girls Basketball Semifinals. Boys are at St. Luke while the Girls are at Holy Redeemer. Good luck teams!

 

  • Jump Rope for Heart

Our Jump Rope for Heart event winds up Thursday as classes will participate in jump-rope activities in their gym times. Thank you to those who have supported our Jump-Rope for Heart Campaign.

 

To date NHS has raised over $1,000 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Thank you very much for your support. While you are in the foyer, please feel free to look at the various representations NHS students created which depict how they can maintain a healthy lifestyle.

 

 

Grade 5 Independent Studies: Mrs. Watson and Ms. Joly’s classes are preparing for their in-class presentations this Wednesday & Thursday. Next week on February 23, the Grade 5s will be holding their IS Fair to share their learning with the school and others interested in viewing the projects.

 

 

 

 

 

Friday, February 16

  • PD Day : Students not in attendance. In the morning, the staff will be working with Corinne Eckert who will be continuing from a previous session on social skills training. In the afternoon, each Division will focus on division needs.

Clubs at NHS

During lunch recess, students have had opportunities to meet in the Learning Commons and other spaces to participate in some extracurricular activities.

Chess has been a very popular game during lunch recess. The schedule for chess is as follows:

  • Monday & Wednesday: Grades 1-3
  • Tuesday & Thursday: Grades 4-6

 

 

 

During all lunch hour recesses, the Learning Commons is available to junior high students as a study hall.

 

Students from grades 4-6 are also invited to learn a dance routine. Led by grade 6 students, those interested can meet in the gym on Tuesday and Thursday during lunch recess.

Grade 5/6 Basketball

Last week on Friday, three groups of boys and girls in grades 5 and 6 participated in an evening of basketball at Holy Spirit School.

The event, organized by the Elk Island Catholic Schools Sports Council, gives students in grades 5 and 6 to play basketball in an fun way.

No score was kept and substitutions on a regular basis to allow for as much participation as possible.
