Talent Show 2017

On Wednesday,  April 26, over 40 K-9 students from NHS  participated in our annual Talent Show. Student acts included singing, dancing, demonstrations such as taekwondo and gymnastics, playing guitar and piano, and even a magic act!

We were excited to begin the show with our elementary choir which came together in mid-January and practiced weekly after school since then.

NHS has been organizing talent shows for many years, and consistently the best part is watching the pride beam from the faces on the students as they perform and as the audience claps in appreciation.

Thank you to all the student performers, to the student and parent helpers, and to all those who attended the show to support our students.

Thank You Parent Volunteers

We at New Horizons School are fortunate to have a parent body so willing to assist the school in so many ways. Whether it be assisting in the classroom  or on a field trip, preparing materials for a classroom, supervising at lunch, acting as Board members, School Council members, or FANHS members, coordinating hot lunches and Scholastic book orders, presenting in classrooms, helping with the Book Fair, or helping at special events, parents are always there to participate and lend support (our apologies if we missed some roles!).

It is amazing that no matter what needs to be done, parent help is always there.

We are truly grateful for such a supportive parent body. Our school is a better place with your participation!

Today New Horizons School hosted a Volunteer Tea to recognize the valuable contributions made by our parents. Staff prepared a wide range of food items, while some elementary classes provided entertainment with dancing and recorder ensembles.

Thank you so much to our parent volunteers. Stand up and take a bow!

A Fun Family Dance

On Friday, April 14,  the NHS School Council hosted a Family Dance. It was very well attended  – and despite not being able to darken the gym for ambiance, it was a great time for everyone.

Besides doing the Macarena, limbo and  YMCA, the children in  danced  the night away to a variety of favorites.

The evening also gave the parents an opportunity to visit with the parents of their children’s classmates. As an added bonus, School Council also had a small concession available.

Thank you to the School Council for organizing this fun event, and all of those who came out to support it.

School Crossing Sign on Hawkins Crescent

Parents who drive their students to school in the morning and pick them up after school are aware of the traffic congestion at those times.

During those peak morning and after school times, many people cross the street to get to the school or to their vehicles.

In order to make crossing Hawkins Crescent in front of NHS safer, School Council has approved the purchase of a portable School Crossing sign.

On the morning of Wednesday, April 19, parents driving their children to and from school will see the new sign. It will be placed at the entrance to the parking lot where there is a natural crosswalk.

We urge parents to help their children cross at the crosswalk to avoid jay-walking, and to stay on the school’s sidewalk to avoid crossing the parking lot during peak traffic times.

Please stress with your child that despite the sign, all road safety practices still need to be used – stop, look, extend arm and proceed when safe.

We do have a concern about the sign adding to the congestion, so we will monitor the effect it has. In the meantime, drivers, please do not park in a way that blocks the crosswalk so that pedestrian’s are visible and so that traffic can move around the sign.

Thank you to the NHS School Council for purchasing this sign to help keep our students safe.
